Background of the Study

Corporate communication significantly influences how organizations and institutions are represented in the media. For government institutions, effective communication is critical in shaping public narratives, building trust, and fostering accountability. In Akko Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, where government activities are often scrutinized by the media, corporate communication plays a vital role in ensuring accurate and balanced representation. Studies (Usman & Bello, 2023; Garba et al., 2024) suggest that proactive communication strategies can counter misinformation, highlight institutional achievements, and improve stakeholder relationships. However, challenges such as inadequate communication infrastructure and low media literacy hinder effective media representation in Akko. This study investigates how corporate communication impacts the media portrayal of government institutions in Akko, offering insights into strategies for enhancing institutional credibility.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Media representation of government institutions in Akko LGA often highlights issues such as inefficiency, corruption, and lack of transparency, undermining public trust. Usman and Bello (2023) argue that these negative portrayals are often exacerbated by ineffective corporate communication practices, including inconsistent messaging and lack of proactive media engagement. Furthermore, the absence of localized research on the role of corporate communication in shaping media narratives limits the ability of government institutions to address these challenges effectively. This study explores the impact of corporate communication on media representation in Akko, providing actionable recommendations for improving institutional image and public trust.
